Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom teeth are the last of your teeth to develop and generally do not emerge until your late teens or early twenties. Generally, your wisdom teeth may develop without any complications, however, occasionally they may emerge misaligned or crooked causing discomfort and pain.

The removal of wisdom teeth is necessary when they are prevented from properly emerging within the mouth. They may grow sideways, partially emerge from the gum and even remain trapped (impacted) beneath the gum and bone.

Impacted teeth can take many positions in the bone as they attempt to find a pathway that will allow them to emerge successfully. This can possibly lead to an exposed pocket of gum that can become vulnerable to recurrent and painful infections.

Removal of wisdom teeth will help to eliminate the problems associated with impacted wisdom teeth, such as:

  • Bacteria and plaque build-up,
  • Infection and jaw and gum disease
  • Crowding of mouth and pushing straight teeth out of alignment
  • Development of cysts

Often the removal of one or all of the wisdom teeth can be conducted at our surgery with the use of local anaesthetic, however for more serious cases or especially anxious patients this procedure can also take place under a general anaesthetic at the local hospital.

Please ask the team at Cooper Street Dental if you have any queries or concerns.
